Investments in small-scale agricultural water management (AWM) can yield big payoffs—in terms of reduced poverty and improved food security in rural areas. But, particularly in challenging contexts—where the necessary supporting institutions, infrastructure or services may be weak or missing—the positive impacts from such investments are difficult to sustain once outside funding ends.
AgWater in challenging contexts, a three year collaboration between the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), is finding ways to address this problem. This work will increase the effectiveness and sustainability of agricultural water management interventions and ultimately help poor communities leverage donor and government investments into lasting benefits.
The project will provide governments, NGOs, and financing institutions with:
- Tools and methods for analysing AWM opportunities and constraints in challenging contexts.
- Guidance on designing appropriate interventions for specific contexts.
- Promising public and private investment opportunities.
